Stable to Stirrup was founded by a group of passionate people in Canterbury who want to create a viable alternative option for standardbred horses when they retire from the harness racing industry. We facilitate the rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of these horses to give them a chance at a life after racing.
The costs of keeping, training, and feeding a horse don't get any less when they retire. These horses need hay, rugs, pasture, as well as farrier and veterinary care during this time and they undergo a period of rest and recuperation before they can enter into the retraining program. Due to limited resources many standardbreds don't get a chance to be rehomed. It is a sad reality for these beautiful horses but Stable to Stirrup is committed to changing this.
We aim to maintain a rehoming facility, so that more horses can be taken in, but today the most urgent need is to raise funds for primary horse care. Our program sees the horses transition from racing stable to restarting undersaddle and then rehomed when they are ready. We also educate people about the breed and for a long time the standardbred horse has been disadvantaged by its pedigree. However, with the work of retrainers and rehomers, these horses are becoming well-known as great riding horses for recreation and companionship.
