For over three decades, Moana House has provided a warm, caring, and supportive home for older people in the Whangamata community. From its beginnings with 36 rest home beds, the facilities have grown to include a hospital wing and expanded rest home that accommodates independent and assisted-living services for primary care and convalescent residents. Indications are that one in three people in the Whangamata community will need the support of aged residential care services at some point.
Run by a charitable trust, Moana House and Village is about to grow in two directions as it responds to the changing needs among our older population. There is a growing need in the community for a purpose-built dementia unit. There is also a real need for independent apartment living for those who are mobile and want to enjoy a lifestyle where they are self-reliant.
At Moana House we believe that education is a lifelong activity and independence is retained wherever possible.
There are a total of 47 beds at Moana House made up of 27 Rest Home beds and 20 Hospital beds. There are 5 Serviced Apartments. At Willson Gardens there are 14 Retirement Units all of which are occupied.
We are in the process of preparing a Resource Consent application for the development of 12 new Villas. These will be independent living accommodation for older persons who want the freedom to enjoy a full and carefree lifestyle.
Once the Villa development is under way, we will progress our plans to build an 80-bed care facility to replace the aging rest home and hospital building and incorporate a much-needed dementia unit.
As part of our staff recruitment and retention plan, we are working on the addition of dwellings for staff accommodation. We will also include staff accommodation in Stage Three of our development plans.
When the development of our complex has been completed, we will be proud to offer continuum of care services for our Whangamata community.
